Verifying currently owns 15-1 odds to win the 2023 Kentucky Derby after the post positions were announced on Monday. It's no surprise to see the bay colt with solid odds given his training background.

Verifying Horse Trainer and Jockey

Verifying is trained by the renowned Brad Cox. The two-time Eclipse Award-winner has one Kentucky Derby win to his name after training Mandaloun in 2021. That wasn't the only Triple Crown victory Cox added to his resume two years ago, training Essential Quality for his Belmont Stakes victory.

Verifying's jockey for the 2023 Kentucky Derby is Tyler Gaffalione. The accomplished racer is looking to finally break through in this event after going 0-5 over his previous starts here. Gaffalione's best finish was with War of Will in 2019, ending the iconic event in seventh place.

Verifying has a career record of zero starts without a win, but he does hold a pair of second-place finishes. He enters the Derby following a second-place finish at the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes in his last race just under one month ago.

While Kentucky Derby upsets have occurred in the past, I'd pivot away from Verifying. He's a talented colt, but his lack of results is concerning. Even with a strong trainer like Brad Cox behind Verifying, it can't be ignored that Junior Alvarado has never finished better than seventh at Churchill Downs. There are more viable options this year.
