Trey Sermon Fantasy Outlook Still Uninspiring After Signing With Eagles

A year ago, Trey Sermon was poised to offer legitimate fantasy value as a handcuff in the San Francisco 49ers backfield. That value disappeared quickly when the rookie tallied just 41 carries for 167 yards in just nine games. Expected to ride the bench once again, Sermon held little to no worth for fantasy managers heading into the 2022 campaign.

Sermon actually fell out of favor with the 49ers' decision makers this preseason and was cut by the team earlier this week. He's since been claimed by the Philadelphia Eagles, but does Sermon's new situation offer any major change to his fantasy outlook?

The answer is a resounding no.

Sermon's new situation will begin on the bench. The second-year back remains firmly behind Miles Sanders, Kenneth Gainwell and Boston Scott on Philly's Week 1 roster. Some insiders suspect he could end up on the practice squad before opening kickoff as well.

The clearest lane for Sermon to provide any impact on a fantasy team is through his pass-catching. He caught 3-of-4 passes in his rookie year, but the 49ers simply didn't utilize him in any facet of their offense.

Unfortunately for Sermon, the Eagles' offense already has their pass-catching back. Gainwell led the team with 50 targets a year ago, turning in 33 receptions for 253 yards. He wasn't the most efficient receiver (66.0% catch percentage), but Sanders was another reliable check-down option for Jalen Hurts (76.5% catch percentage on 34 targets).

Sermon may be worth a sneaky waiver-wire pickup if the Eagles' backfield begins dealing with injuries, but don't think about using any of your fantasy draft picks on the former third-rounder. It won't be surprising to go the entire year without hearing Sermon's name in any sort of fantasy relevancy in 2022. His ADP ranks at RB86 and No. 272 overall.
