Trey Lance Suffers Major Setback During Recovery From Ankle Injury

Updated:

Propelled by a fierce defense, the San Francisco 49ers have climbed their way to the top of the NFC despite some major injury troubles at quarterback this season. San Francisco is onto their third starting quarterback thus far, and while Brock Purdy may continue his magical run, the team is still very intent on working Trey Lance back to full health.

Unfortunately, Lance recently suffered a major setback during his recovery from a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2.

Reports indicate that Lance underwent a second surgery on his right ankle on Friday. This marks Lance's second surgery on the ankle in the span of three months.

According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the follow-up surgery was to remove hardware from the initial procedure on his ankle and to prevent irritation the young gunslinger was experiencing.

Lance will be on crutches for at least two more weeks, causing a delay in the initial timeline of this injury. The 49ers are hopeful Lance is still on track to join the team for organized activities during the spring.

For now, the 49ers are focused on winning their 12th game of the year in Week 17 when they take on the Las Vegas Raiders. San Francisco is considered a 9.5-point road favorite, according to NFL odds on FanDuel Sportsbook.
