Tigers Get Encouraging Injury Update on Key Pitcher
Updated:
Coming off their sixth straight losing season, the Detroit Tigers are hoping 2023 brings better results. One player who could potentially give them a boost is starting pitcher Tarik Skubal, who underwent elbow surgery last August and is still recovering.
For his part, Skubal is optimistic that he'll be able to return in 2023.
Tarik Skubal Injury Update
Now six months removed from his season-ending operation, Skubal is progressing well in his rehab and is determined to get back on the field.
The 26-year-old southpaw was enjoying the best season of his career before going under the knife, posting a 3.52 ERA and a 2.96 FIP with 117 strikeouts in 117 2/3 innings.
While Skubal will need to miss a good chunk of 2023 as well, he's hopeful that he'll be able to return to the mound sooner rather than later and pick up where he left off.
The Tigers need all the help they can get after going 66-96 last year, and that includes a healthy Skubal. He was the ace of their staff in 2022 and there will be a big hole at the top of their rotation until he comes back.
If Detroit is able to stay competitive without him, however, Skubal could provide a major lift down the stretch. The Tigers are currently +15000 longshots to win the 2023 World Series on FanDuel Sportsbook's MLB odds.
