Santa Anita Horse Racing Picks for Saturday 4/29/23

The rebranded spring portion of Santa Anita's six-month racing season stated Friday, April 21 with a new moniker – the “Hollywood Meet."

There are 12 races at "The Great Race Place" on Saturay and post time is at 4 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. local.

As always, check the program for scratches and changes, and monitor the weather track conditions.

(I will reference Equibase's Speed Figure in selected races, which tells you how fast a horse has been running in each of its races after adjusting for track, distances, and conditions).

1. Ancient Peace and Paris Secret, Race 3

Race 3 is the $100,000 Grade 3 Providencia Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at 1 1/8 miles on the turf. Just six runners, and both Guaranteed Tip Sheet and numberFire have Ancient Peace (8/5) on top following a pair of blow-out wins her last two races. She's ridden by the meets top jockey Juan Hernandez, who rode her to her maiden win the end of Dec. and was sold at auction for $650K before winning an Allowance race three weeks ago with ease while building a 10-length lead in the stretch.

Miss Lizzy (5/1) switched to turf to get her maiden win last time out for trainer Doug O'Neill. Paris Secret (5/2) made her US debut here last month and finished fourth after getting blocked in the lane. She's projected to hit the board according to numberFire's data, along with Broadway Girls (5/2).

2. Adare Manor and Big Switch, Race 9

Race 9 is the $200,000 Grade 2 Santa Maria Stakes for older fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles. Adare Manor (8/5) is the top pick of GTS with the meets top jockey Juan Hernandez riding for trainer Bob Baffert. She has 3 wins and three runner-up finishes in six starts at Santa Anita. That includes gate-to-wire a win by a head over Big Switch (2/1) the end of March in a route. But Big Switch is unbeaten in a pair at the distance.

numberFire likes those two as top win challengers, along with Bellamore (4/1).

3. Carmen Miranda and Shocking Grey, Race 12

Race 12 is an Allowance race with a full field of 12 fillies and mares going 6 1/2 furlongs on the downhill turf. The top win contenders by the odds include Carmen Miranda (3/1) from the outside No. 11 post, and Guaranteed Tip Sheet adds Lucky for You (6/1) with Juan Hernandez riding for trainer Bob Baffert, and Shocking Grey (6/1).

Carmen Miranda looks tough based on back-to-back fast races against tougher company. Shocking Grey goes route to sprint looking for her third straight win after scratching out of her last two starts. The numberFire algorithm also give longshot Lady Jae (15/1) a chance to pull the upset, and she rinished runner-up here in a Grade 3 race in Jan.
