Salt Lake City Summer League Teams, Format and History

Salt Lake City Summer League Teams, Format and History

Updated:

NBA fans are buzzing after the draft. Those itching to see their team's new rookies in action won't have to wait long as Summer League festivities begin to tip off in early July.

One event part of the offseason basketball circuit is the Salt Lake City Summer League, which doesn't get as much attention as the main showcase in Las Vegas. With that in mind, here's what you need to know about the Salt Lake City Summer League's history.

What is the Salt Lake City Summer League?

The Salt Lake City Summer League is one of three summer leagues used by the NBA during the offseason. It's hosted by the Utah Jazz and serves as a tune-up for the main NBA Summer League tournament in Las Vegas.

The Salt Lake City Summer League was initially known as the Rocky Mountain Revue, which began as a community outreach program in 1984 that featured players from local colleges like BYU. In 1990, it turned into an NBA-only event with the Jazz and other teams participating. The league even saw international and D-League entrants as well.

The Rocky Mountain Revue was canceled in 2009 due to declining numbers. The Jazz revived it in 2015, however, on a smaller scale than the previous iteration and renaming the showcase to the Salt Lake City Summer League.

Salt Lake City Summer League Teams & Schedule 2023

The 2023 Salt Lake City Summer League will take place from July 3-6 and be played at the newly renamed Delta Center in Utah. The event once again features a smaller field of teams this year, with the Jazz, Memphis Grizzlies, Philadelphia 76ers and Oklahoma City Thunder participating.

Since the SLC Summer League uses a round-robin format, every squad faces each opponent once. Unlike the Vegas Summer League, though, there is no playoff round and no champion is crowned.

Five of the six games at the 2023 Salt Lake City Summer League game will be broadcast by NBA TV, while the other remaining contest is airing on ESPN2. Check out the entire schedule below:
