Remembering When Andrew McCutchen Had the Coolest Baseball Card in Phillies' History

Andrew McCutchen's 2019 season may have been one to forget for the man himself, but at least he secured one of the coolest baseball cards in Philadelphia Phillies history.

McCutchen's first year in Philadelphia was going well, but he tore his ACL after 59 games and missed the rest of the year. That injury would ultimately lead to this photo being taken, as McCutchen was forced to spend the rest of the year just chilling on the bench. By the end of the season, McCutchen had decided to up his outerwear to maximum cool.

That directly led to the photo that was featured on this baseball card. Cutch is rocking a half-zipped Phillies warm-up jacket and a slick pair of aviators. He knows he's cool, and there's nothing that can detract from that, even while holding a double paper cup.

After seeing this photo, taken by Rick Schultz, the folks at Topps decided they had to feature it for McCutchen's 2020 baseball card. Hopefully McCutchen will stay healthy during the 2020 season so we can get a similar version of this photo next year.

The card harkens back to the 1980s and early 1990s, when baseball cards often strayed away from making players look "professional" and portrayed them in rather absurd situations. Take, for example, this card of Minnesota Twins player Brian Harper.

Or this card featuring San Francisco Giants pitcher Randy McCament.

Hopefully the popularity of this McCutchen card will spur a revival in entertaining baseball cards, rather than an endless cycle of batters swinging in front of a crowd.
