Red Sox vs Phillies Prediction & Pick
Baseball enthusiasts should brace for a fair amount of offense tonight. Red Sox starter Corey Kluber hasn't played like a two-time Cy Young winner this season. The veteran righty is just 1-4 with a 6.44 ERA through six starts and has yet to be trusted with pitching beyond the sixth inning.
The Phillies haven't gotten great pitching from Bailey Falter, either. The former 2015 fifth-rounder leads the Majors with five losses in six 2023 starts, tallying a 5.01 ERA while surrendering 10 hits per nine innings along the way.
While neither starter has played well, I like the Red Sox's chances of winning. For starters, Boston plays well against lefties, ranking No. 9 in on-base percentage (.340) and No. 13 in slugging percentage (.414) when facing southpaws.
Secondly, the Phillies' offense disappears whenever Falter takes to the mound, averaging exactly two runs through his six starts. With the Red Sox boasting the third-best offense in the MLB, I don't see the home team being able to keep pace tonight.
Final Score Prediction: Red Sox: 7 | Phillies: 3
Red Sox vs Phillies Best Bet
With both starting pitchers struggling, I'm backing the total going over 9.5 runs as the best bet tonight. It helps that the Over is 12-5 in Boston's last 17 road games, as well as 3-0-1 in Philadelphia's previous four. The Phillies have also allowed an average of 10.3 runs over that stretch, making the Over a real possibility even if the Red Sox must do most of the heavy lifting.
After combining for eight runs last night, I won't be shocked if Boston and Philly score a few more than that tonight.
Bet: Over 9.5 Total Runs (-102)
