Nick Sirianni Discusses Being Fired by Andy Reid

Updated:

When the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles both punched their tickets to Super Bowl 57, the NFL was gifted a matchup between the two best offenses in football. Head coaches Andy Reid and Nick Sirianni are the masterminds of these league-leading attacks, and it should come as no surprise that the two are very connected.

In fact, the two coaches used to work with their upcoming opponent. Reid was famously the Eagles head coach for 14 seasons and Sirianni spent the first four years of his career as a Chiefs' assistant.

In somewhat of an overlooked fact, Reid was actually the coach to send Sirianni packing during his Chiefs tenure. When Reid took over head coaching duties in 2013, he let Sirianni, who was working as a wide receivers coach at the time, go.

Sirianni reflected on getting fired by his Super Bowl opponent.

This wasn't your typical firing. Sirianni explained that Reid was bringing in a high-ranking assistant that worked with the wide receivers and he did the generous act of "lifting [Sirianni] up" in that moment.

"He gave me strength when I was down and I always admired that," said Sirianni. "So, even though I never worked with him, I felt like I gained a valuable lesson from him to be able to reach out and talk to the guys. I just always remember thinking of coach Reid in that moment because he gave me a good blueprint of what to do when you have to do the tough parts of this job."

It's a pretty special story and goes to show just how small the NFL coaching world is.

Sirianni has a great opportunity to avenge this firing on Sunday. The Eagles are considered 1.5-point favorites over Kansas City, per Super Bowl 57 odds on FanDuel Sportsbook.
