MLS All-Star Game Format, Locations and History of Past Results

Updated:

The midway point of the MLS season is approaching once again, and that means fans are hyped for the league's upcoming All-Star Game. This midsummer exhibition is unique compared to other North American sports leagues, and there's plenty of intriguing history in this contest's past.

With that in mind, here's everything you need to know about the MLS All-Star Game.

MLS All-Star Game Format and History

The MLS All-Star game is an annual exhibition featuring a select group of Major League Soccer players against an international club or All-Stars from Liga MX, the top professional league in Mexico. MLS participants are chosen by a mixture of fan votes, coach nominations and the commissioner.

The first Major League Soccer All-Star Game was held in 1996. It followed the traditional ASG format of the Eastern Conference verus the Western Conference, with team MLS East winning 3-2.

In 1998, the league experimented for the first time with its All-Star Game, separating players into two sides: MLS USA and MLS World, the latter of which featured the league's best from countries outside of the United States.

The eighth MLS All-Star Game, held in 2003, introduced an international opponent (Mexico's Chivas) for the first time. This set the stage for the current-day format, which sees the MLS's All-Star team play an opponent from outside the United States.

From 2005-2019, the MLS' best faced European opponents in the All-Star Game, with most hailing from the Premier League. In 2021 and 2022, MLS' All-Stars played a select group of participants from Liga MX in this exhibition.

The league will return to facing European competition in 2023, as Major League Soccer's All-Stars are slated to battle Arsenal at Audi Field in Washington, D.C. on July 19.
