MLB Insider Makes Strong Projection on Martin Perez Trade Value

After a furious offseason spending spree, the Texas Rangers' 2022 campaign has been a disappointment as the team continues to play sub-.500 baseball into June. One silver lining has been the emergence of a surprise ace, 31-year-old veteran Martin Perez.

Perez is dealing in his 11th MLB season, posting a career-best 2.12 ERA and league-leading 0.2 home runs allowed per nine innings. As with any struggling team heading into the summer, the Rangers have to examine the unfortunate possibility of using Perez as bait during the upcoming trade deadline.

MLB insider Ken Rosenthal recently weighed in on Perez' trade value, making a very strong sentiment about the veteran lefty's value.

Rosenthal detailed his thoughts on how the market will view Perez' trade value, and it's not particularly favorable. After posting a career 4.71 ERA prior to this breakout campaign, Perez will be viewed "as an aberration," and "[teams] will construct their offers accordingly."

That's not promising for a big return of young prospects. Rosenthal also doubles down that this would be a misguided approach for Texas' current rebuild. He calls the potential option "counterproductive" because the Rangers need to "stop the cycle of spinning veterans for younger players."

It's a keen insight into the current state of the Rangers, and one that GM Chris Young is likely considering himself. Rosenthal went as far as declaring Perez will finish the season in Texas and perhaps sign an extension on his current deal.

For now, the Rangers look to climb above .500. The team sits at just 28-31, and holds longshot +25000 odds to win the 2022 World Series on FanDuel Sportsbook.
