The Mavericks might be the clear-cut favorites, but it's been hard trusting them lately due to a lack of defense. Though the Mavs only allow 112.2 PPG this season (No. 8), they've allowed an average of 119.5 over their last eight games. What's even worse is that they've surrendered at least 130 points in three of their last five outings.

Making matters worse is that the Mavericks already lost 113-105 to the Wizards back in November. Washington has had its road struggles this season, but the Wizards have won four of their last six road games, even beating solid teams like the Milwaukee Bucks and Sacramento Kings over that stretch.

I still think that the Mavericks will win tonight due to Luka Doncic's presence (33.3 PPG over his last 10 games), but the Wizards will make it a lot closer than the odds imply.

It's too hard for me to trust the Mavericks as -7 favorites. On top of being 1-4 ATS in its last five games, Dallas has failed to cover the spread in nine of its last 12 outings in January. That's not even to mention it is 1-5-1 ATS in its last seven games against the Southeast Division.

Meanwhile, the Wizards have covered the spread in seven of their last eight games against the Mavericks. Having already beaten Dallas by eight points two months ago, I see the Wizards covering the spread with the potential of upsetting the Mavs.
