Mariners Get Bad News on Sam Haggerty Injury Update
Updated:
The Seattle Mariners are trying their hardest to hold on to the American League's final Wild Card spot. Unfortunately, that quest became a bit tougher after infielder Sam Haggerty exited Friday's 3-2 win over the Cleveland Guardians after a pitch hit his left hand while attempting a bunt.
Although Haggerty initially stayed in the game, the pain was too much to bear and he exited the game just one inning later. Further medical testing over the weekend should provide a clearer picture, however, that doesn't change how this isn't the news that Mariners wanted to hear as September nears.
Sam Haggerty Injury Update
This incident is just the latest injury woe that Haggerty's had to deal with lately. He was dealing with a lingering shoulder injury earlier this month, also on his left side. Hopefully, some brief time away from the game can help both injuries heal ahead of the 2022 MLB campaign's final stretch.
Haggerty's versatility has landed him a key role in the Mariners' lineup, showing that he could play any outfield position as well as second base in 2022. He's demonstrated offensive consistency as well, batting .303 in 119 at-bats while recording four home runs, 15 RBIs and 10 stolen passes.
Dylan Moore filled in for Haggerty in right field after the latter's exit, which could be the case going forward for now. The 29-year-old veteran has five HRs and 16 RBIs while slashing .205/.355/.373 in 87 games with the Mariners this season.
For now, Haggerty's injury is being treated as day-to-day. Only time will tell if the Mariners have more clarity on the situation sometime this weekend.
