Marcus Sasser 2023 NBA Draft Profile (Combine Results, Measurements & Scouting Report for Jerry West Award Winner)

Updated:

Houston's Marcus Sasser enters the 2023 NBA Draft as one of the more intriguing prospects available. After dazzling fans for four years with the Cougars, only time will tell if Sasser has more success at the NBA level.

Here's everything you need to know about Marcus Sasser before the 2023 NBA Draft.

Marcus Sasser Scouting Report and Draft Prediction

Sasser's final season with the Cougars was a solid one, averaging 16.8 points on .438/.384/.848 shooting splits. His play earned him AAC Player of the Year honors, as well as the Jerry West Award for the No. 1 shooting guard in all of college basketball, previously won by current NBAers like D'Angelo Russell, RJ Barrett, and Buddy Hield.

What stands out about Sasser is his shooting, having shot 38.4% or better from the three-point line in each of the last two seasons. His 84.8% free-throw rate also implies that he'll have deep success at the next level. He also knows how to defend, having averaged 1.6 steals and 2.5 defensive rebounds in 2022-23.

Sasser is in an interesting spot because while just over 6-foot-1 is solid for a point guard, he's far from a great playmaker. At the same time, that's a bit too short for an everyday shooting guard. He's also an older prospect (22), which could see him fall to the second round.

The Boston Celtics make sense to me as a team that wouldn't mind drafting Sasser in Round 2. Marcus Smart, Malcolm Brogdon, and Derrick White are all capable of playing point guard minutes, which would let Sasser focus on shooting.

Boston also averaged the second-most threes on the sixth-best success rate last season, meaning it's the perfect environment for Sasser's shooting to grow. Again, he's also a solid defender, which is exactly what the Celtics ask for from the majority of their lineup.

Prediction: Boston Celtics (Round 2, 35th overall)
