List of Every Super Bowl All-Time in Regular and Roman Numerals
Updated:
With its unique food, betting opportunities and theatrics, the Super Bowl is unlike any other sporting event. Everything about the Super Bowl is bigger, even the name.
One clear difference is that the Super Bowl uses roman numerals rather than traditional numbers. For instance, this year's NFL championship game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles is titled Super Bowl LVII, which means Super Bowl 57.
That may seem odd to some people, so let's explain why that's the case.
Why is the Super Bowl in Roman Numerals?
Whereas most sports championships are named after the year in which they take place (i.e. 2023 NBA Finals), the Super Bowl is different. Instead of the year, it uses the number of how many times the game has been played. In other words, the 2023 edition of the Super Bowl is called Super Bowl LVII because it is the 57th Super Bowl in NFL history.
The Super Bowl has roman numerals for a few reasons. One reason is because the game always takes place in the calendar year after the regular season. For example, the Super Bowl that takes place in February 2023 is actually for the 2022 NFL season, which ran from September 2022 - January 2023. Using the number of the game rather than the year helps eliminate any confusion about whether the 2023 Super Bowl is referring to the game that was played in 2023 or the game that decided the 2023 season (which will be played in 2024).
Another reason is because roman numerals make the game seem even bigger and more important, like a movie sequel or the next round of a fight. At least that's what AFL and Chiefs founder Lamar Hunt thought when he initially proposed the idea.
History of Super Bowl Roman Numerals
Roman numerals were not originally part of the Super Bowl's title when the game was first played in 1967. In fact, it wasn't even called the Super Bowl at first. The game was originally called the AFL-NFL World Championship Game, which was later changed to the Super Bowl in 1969.
The NFL didn't officially include roman numerals until the fifth edition of the game in 1971, making it Super Bowl V. Roman numerals were thus retroactively added to the four Super Bowls that preceded it.
Every Super Bowl since then has had roman numerals in the title except for one -- Super Bowl 50. The roman numeral for 50 is "L", which also stands for loss in sports. Accordingly, Super Bowl 50 is the only game referred to be its traditional number rather than the roman numeral version of it.
