Latest Matthew Stafford Injury Update Takes Dramatic Turn for Rams
Updated:
This season just keeps getting worse for the Los Angeles Rams.
The Rams have collapsed since winning the Super Bowl in February, going 3-7 to start the 2022 season and tumbling to last place in the NFC West. Injuries have played a major role in the team's demise, as star receiver Cooper Kupp went on IR earlier this month and quarterback Matthew Stafford has been banged up as well.
Now, Stafford's outlook for the rest of the season looks even more uncertain after Los Angeles received a concerning injury update on him.
Matthew Stafford Injury Update
Stafford, who has already been ruled out for the Rams' Week 12 tilt against the Kansas City Chiefs, may not return this season. He's currently dealing with a strained neck and is in concussion protocol for the second time this year after exiting Week 11's loss to the New Orleans Saints.
With Los Angeles all but guaranteed to miss the playoffs at this point, there's no sense in risking further injury to its 34-year-old signal-caller. Stafford hasn't looked right all season and would likely benefit from some extended time off.
Unfortunately for the Rams, the Detroit Lions have their 2023 first-round pick from the Stafford trade. Throwing in the towel on the 2022 campaign would only be helping Detroit, who could end up with a top draft selection depending on where LA finishes.
Still, the Rams need to do what's best for Stafford at this point. He's signed with Los Angeles through 2026, so keeping him healthy going forward is imperative. With +21000 odds of winning the Super Bowl on FanDuel Sportsbook's NFL odds, the Rams are clearly not going to repeat this year and need to start planning ahead for 2023.
