Josh Whyle Scouting Report
Josh Whyle remained a reliable target during his final campaign at Cincinnati. The promising tight end turned 32 receptions into 326 yards and 3 touchdowns, earning first-team All-AAC honors along the way.
Standing over 6-foot-6 and weighing nearly 250 pounds, Whyle has the perfect frame to be an NFL TE. He's able to make catches against the toughest defenders due to his toughness and isn't shy when it comes to displaying his leaping ability. He was also a touchdown machine over the last three seasons, tallying 15 TDs on 86 catches (17.4%).
As with most Day 2/3 selections, Whyle is far from perfect. He tends to use his body to catch deep balls rather than use his hands. He struggles to create separation, so his route running needs improvement as well. He also isn't the best blocker, making him a potential liability on rushing downs.
Josh Whyle NFL Draft Prediction
Josh Whyle's draft stock is all over the place, to say the least. One mock draft projects him to go as early as the third round while another has him on the board until Round 7. Having said that, four of the five highlighted projects lean towards his being a Day 3 pick.
The Miami Dolphins are one team that should consider drafting Whyle. With Mike Gesicki now on the New England Patriots, the Dolphins have an opening for a scoring TE like the Cincinnati product. They already have Durham Smythe under contract, but he's more of a blocking tight end, making him the perfect complement for a weak blocker like Whyle.
With playmaking pass-catchers like Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle on the team, Whyle wouldn't have to deal with too much pressure. The Dolphins might have to trade up to snag him, but it's clear that he'd be a solid fit in Miami.
Prediction: Miami Dolphins (Round 6, 197th overall)
