JL Skinner Scouting Report

JL Skinner continued being one of Boise State's key defensive pieces during the 2022 campaign. The talented safety set career highs in both interceptions (4) and broken-up passes (5) while adding 65 total tackles along the way.

One reason why Skinner excels is because of his speed. He can explode at any moment, helping him cover an opposing pass-catcher or get involved in the run defense when needed. He also has a solid football IQ that helps him read opposing plays.

Skinner does have some weaknesses, though. He struggles at times to get around blocks and needs to improve his lower-body strength. He'll occasionally take the less efficient route when it comes to breaking up passes, too.

JL Skinner NFL Draft Prediction

JL Skinner is one of those players who's solid but could take things to the next level with proper coaching. All of his issues are things that can be worked on, so only time will tell if he ends up on the right team to blossom.

The New England Patriots are a team that could get the best out of Skinner. After all, the Patriots have somewhat of a void after Devin McCourty retired this offseason. Skinner won't match the retiree's production right out of the gate, but he could still develop into a Pro-Bowler one day.

With six picks in the first four rounds, the Patriots have plenty of opportunities to add Skinner. He isn't a top-rated prospect, though, so I could see them waiting until the fourth round to pull the trigger.

Prediction: New England Patriots (Round 4, 107th overall)
