Has Texas Ever Won a National Championship?
Updated:
After capturing the Big 12 Championship, the Texas Longhorns have continued to impress well into the 2022-23 NCAA Tournament. Texas' March Madness dreams are that much closer to becoming a reality now that it has secured a spot in the Sweet 16.
While winning a conference championship is impressive, taking home a national title is another story. Still, the Longhorns are a talented squad backed by interim head coach Rodney Terry, capable of taking down anyone in their path.
If all goes to plan, would this be the first time that Texas fans celebrate a national championship victory?
Texas National Championship History
Texas has never won an NCAA men's basketball National Championship. In fact, the Longhorns have yet to play in the championship game altogether.
The furthest Texas has made it in March Madness is to the Final Four on three separate occasions (1943, 1947 and 2003). This is also the Longhorns' first Sweet 16 appearance since 2008. They made it all the way to the Elite 8 as the South's No. 2 seed, only to lose 85-67 to No. 1 Memphis.
Having not made it to the Sweet 16 in 15 years, time will tell if Texas has what it takes to continue advancing and eventually win the first National Championship in program history.
