Has San Diego State Ever Won a National Championship?
Updated:
The San Diego State Aztecs have dominated the Mountain West Conference in recent years, but March Madness success is another story. Fast forward to this year's NCAA Tournament and the Aztecs have joined the Sweet 16 for just the third time in program history.
With a lack of deep NCAA Tournament runs, it's unsurprising that college basketball fans wonder if Brian Dutcher's team has what it takes to go all the way.
If it does, would this be the first time that San Diego State fans celebrate a national championship victory?
San Diego State National Championship History
San Diego State has never won an NCAA men's basketball National Championship. They've yet to even make it to the Elite 8, finishing in the Sweet 16 two previous times (2011 and 2014).
The Aztecs were the No. 2 seed in 2011 but were ultimately upset by No. 3 UConn. They then came up short against No. 1 Arizona as the No. 4 seed in 2014.
Having not made it to the Sweet 16 in nearly a decade, time will tell if San Diego State has what it takes not only to make it to the Elite 8, but also to take home its first-ever national championship.
