3 Greatest Running Backs in Chiefs History

The Kansas City Chiefs drafted running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire out of LSU to compete for next year's starting job, and they'll be hoping the rookie can become the next in a long line of great running backs in KC.

With that in mind, let's look back at Chiefs history to determine the three best running backs in franchise history.

3. Larry Johnson (2003-2009)

Larry Johnson had huge shoes to fill when he took over as the Chiefs' lead back, but he stepped in a huge way. A first-team All-Pro in 2006 and two-time Pro Bowler, Johnson's peak was short, but included back-to-back seasons with at least 1,700 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns. His 6,015 rushing yards still rank third in franchise history.

2. Jamaal Charles (2008-2016)

Jamaal Charles is the franchise leader in both rushing yards (7,260) and yards from scrimmage (9,717). A true dual threat, Charles had 43 touchdowns on the ground as well as 20 through the air in KC. The two-time All-Pro 's career average of 5.4 yards per carry is the highest mark for any running back in the Super Bowl era.

1. Priest Holmes (2001-2007)

Priest Holmes was the star back that Johnson had to take over for. Holmes played six seasons with the Chiefs, winning NFL Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2002 while being named a first-team All-Pro in three straight seasons from 2001 to 2003. In that stretch he led the NFL in rushing yards once (2001) and in rushing touchdowns twice (2002, 2003), and he then led the league with 111.5 yards per game in his injury-shortened 2004 season. His yards per game with Kansas He averaged 93.4 rushing yards per game in KC, and Holmes is now a member of the Chiefs Hall of Fame.
