One of the biggest draws of NBA Summer League in Las Vegas is seeing basketball's next potential stars in action. Though success at this showcase doesn't guarantee anything, it may foreshadow things to come from this year's top prospects.
There's no bigger Summer League honor than taking home MVP, and this award's history includes several future superstars, along with a few surprises.
Who Won the First NBA Summer League MVP?
The Las Vegas Summer League was first established in 2004, and it became the official NBA Summer League in 2008. The first time an MVP award was handed out at the event was in 2006. That year's Most Valuable Player was Randy Foye of the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The No. 7 pick in the 2006 NBA Draft, Foye went on to play 11 seasons in the league, posting career averages of 10.3 PPG, 2.8 APG and 2.2 APG. He made All-Rookie First Team during the 2006-07 campaign.
Las Vegas Summer League MVPs by Year
Since 2006, an MVP (or co-MVP) has been named 15 times at the NBA Summer League. The Los Angeles Lakers, Memphis Grizzlies, Minnesota Timberwolves, Portland Trail Blazers, Sacramento Kings and Washington Wizards are all tied for the most number of MVPs from one team at two each.
