Fantasy Implications of James Robinson Trade Including Michael Carter Fantasy Outlook

The Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Jets pulled off a blockbuster running back trade on Monday night. Jacksonville sent James Robinson over to the Jets, who are looking to replace the injured Breece Hall, after Travis Etienne's emergence as a true RB1.

This trade has loads of fantasy implications for both sides, but let's take a dive into the new-look Jets backfield, and what to expect from Robinson and Michael Carter in terms of fantasy value.

James Robinson Fantasy Outlook

Even after a solid RB35 finish during his rookie campaign, it was quite clear the Jets don't trust Michael Carter as an every down back. That's exactly why they drafted Breece Hall last April, and why they were quick to add the talented Robinson on Monday night.

Robinson steps immediately into another time share, just with a different cast of characters. He'll be handcuffed by Carter's abilities as a pass-catcher (20 receptions on 24 targets), but should start to chip away at a lot of the early-down looks.

I expect Robinson rack up a similar 11 or 12 rushing attempts per game, and Carter holds steady around the 10.1 attempts per game he's averaged the past two years.

The bigger question surrounds New York's red zone usage. Even though Hall was a bigger and stronger runner, Carter gobbled up half of New York's opportunities near the end zone. Hall took 15 red zone rush attempts to Carter's 13, and the pair each recorded less than 5 receiving targets.

Robinson currently checks in at RB34 in Fantasy Pros' rest of season rankings, and we won't have a better idea of Robert Saleh's plans until a few weeks into his Jets tenure.

Michael Carter Fantasy Outlook

Carter's fantasy outlook also holds steady. He should be in line for a boost in Week 8 because of the quick turnaround for Robinson, but the snap counts and usage rates will be very telling over the next few weeks.

The incumbent Jets' RB currently ranks as RB35 in PPR leagues, and is listed at RB23 for Week 8. He'll handle to bulk of responsibilities until Robinson is up to speed, but Robinson will own the early down duties before the year's end.

Don't be afraid of slotting Carter into the starting lineup in Week 8, and even Week 9, but expect a slow drop off from there. His value always indicates a safe floor in PPR leagues because of his 24 passing targets.
