Churchill Downs Horse Racing Picks for Sunday 5/28/23

The Churchill Downs Spring Meet continues with 9 races on Sunday and first post at 12:45 p.m. ET.

1. Deer District and Zambezi, Race 7

Race 7 is an Optional Claimer for 3-year-olds sprinting 6 furlongs. Both numberFire and Guaranteed Tip Sheet have Deer District (5/2) as a top win contender with GTS making him a best bet.

Stud Lovin (5/1) and Zambezi (3/1) can challenge. Deer District has finished in-the-money in five straight races since breaking his maiden last summer. Last race he was up against a pair of stronger favorites and finished third.

2. Floki's Flight and Miacomet, Race 8

Race 8 is a high-end Allowance race at 1-mile. Floki's Flight (4/1) is a best bet of Guaranteed Tip Sheet for leading trainer Dale Romans. Floki's took flight last race when winning here two weeks ago and blowing away his best speed figure when earning a ESF of 106. That caught the attention of numberFire's algorithm, as Floki's Flight is also the top pick.

Top jockey Tyler Gaffalione rides Miacomet (6/1) off a front-running 4-length win last month. Miacomet has finished in-the-money in 4-of-5 races since late Nov.

3. King Curlin and Decanted, Race 9

Race 9 is a Maiden Special Weight at 1 1/8 miles on the turf. Decanted (5/2) is the top pick by numberFire's data with King Curlin (7/2) a top challenger as Guaranteed Tip Sheet's top pick.

The meets top jockey Luis Saez rides Decanted, who raced on the lead at Keeneland last month before fading in the stretch to finish third against a solid group. Decanted still posted his highest speed figure (93).

King Curlin's sire is the great Curlin, and this colt has finished in-the-money in 3-of-4 starts since Dec. with consistent speed figures and a runner-up finish last month.
