The San Francisco 49ers reshaped their offense when they acquired All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey from the Carolina Panthers last week. It was a move that many teams were interested in making, including the Denver Broncos. NFL insider Albert Breer revealed details on the team's offer.
Denver Broncos Christian McCaffrey
Breer explained that the Broncos were one of a few teams that called Carolina on Tuesday, October 18, with the goal of determining what McCaffrey's price tag was. Keep in mind this was a few days after the Panthers made it clear to the first teams to come calling that a first-round pick was wanted.
General manager George Paton offered a third-rounder or fourth-rounder to see if Carolina was willing to give a discount after going through negotiations with other squads. Of course, it turns out the Panthers were not in the market of doing that and the Broncos ultimately fell out of the running.
It shouldn't be too surprising that Paton at least attempted to make a move. He's a GM that has built a reputation for exercising every option he has and the Broncos did lose starting running back Javonte Williams to a torn ACL. Denver is only averaging 109.4 rushing yards per game in 2022 (No. 19 in NFL).
For now, head coach Nathaniel Hackett will continue relying on a backfield consisting of veterans Melvin Gordon and Latavius Murray. An injury to Mike Boone has caused the Broncos to sign Marlon Mack to the active roster, too. A big move prior to the November 1 trade deadline may still take place.
Denver has odds set at +12000 to win Super Bowl 57, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
