Bengals Spent a Shocking Amount of Money in Free Agency This Offseason
Updated:
The Cincinnati Bengals have always had a reputation for being a bit of a cheap franchise. It felt like they would often let stars walk in free agency, and they'd rarely go out of their way to offset those losses with significant signings.
But that all changed this offseason. The Bengals brought in some serious talent via free agency, adding players like D.J. Reader, Trae Waynes and Vonn Bell, to name a few. In fact, Cincinnati actually spent the third-most money in the league on free agents this offseason.
In total, the team spent $131 million on free agents, trailing only the Miami Dolphins ($237 million) and Detroit Lions ($138 million).
Because this spending is so out of character for the organization, perhaps this is a vote of confidence in new franchise quarterback Joe Burrow. With the promising young star at the helm for the foreseeable future, this could be a signal that owner Mike Brown wants to do whatever it takes to ensure Burrow is surrounded by top-level talent.
Whatever the case may be, this is certainly a welcomed change for Bengals fans.
