Belmont Horse Racing Picks for Saturday 5/6/23

Starting at 12:20 p.m. EST, we have 11 races at Belmont Park for opening weekend of the Spring/Summer meet. Included are three stakes.

Using numberFire’s projections as a guide, here are some of the best bets to make at FanDuel Racing.

As always, check the program for scratches and changes, and check the weather and track conditions.

(I will reference Equibase's Speed Figure in selected races, which tells you how fast a horse has been running in each of its races -- adjusted for track, distances, and conditions).

1. Surprise Boss and Anaconda, Race 8

Race 8 is the $150,000 Elusive Quality Stakes for older horses at 7 furlongs on the turf. The numberFire algorithm projects Surprise Boss (8/1) and the favorite Anaconda (9/5) to decide the race from the two inside post positions. Don't rule out Voodoo Zip (3/1) who breaks right next to them.

2. Ottoman Fleet and Rockemperor, Race 9

Race 9 is the $200,000 Grade 2 Fort Marcy Stakes for older horses at 1 1/8 miles on the inner turf. The numberFire data projects the two heavy favorites to challenge for the win with Ottoman Fleet (8/5) and Law Professor (1/2), who will only run if the race is moved to dirt. Rockemperor (4/1) is an Irish-bred who can challenge trainer Chad Brown.

3. Gerrymander and Kathleen O, Race 10

Race 10 is the $200,000 Grade 2 Ruffian Stakes for older fillies and mares at 1 mile. The numberFire data projects Gerrymander (8/1) to upset the favorite, Kathleen O (6/5). Mommasgottarun (6/1) could also hit the board.
Gerrymander has raced in five straight graded stakes with a win at Belmont last summer. She missed the board in her 2023 debut off a layoff, but has worked very sharply in the mornings since for top trainer Chad Brown. Kathleen O also has sharp morning works over the Belmont surface in preparation for her first race ever at Belmont Park. She's won 4-of-8 starts and enters with three straight runner-up finishes in stakes company.
