Astros Announce Pair of Team Legends to Throw Out First Pitch for Game 1 and 2

Updated:

After a brief six-day hiatus, the Houston Astros will take the field for Game 1 of the ALDS against their division rival Seattle Mariners. This is a team making their sixth consecutive postseason appearance and marching towards a fourth World Series appearance in that same span.

All eyes will be on Minute Maid Park this afternoon when Justin Verlander takes the mound and Houston's World Series push officially begins. But first, the fans will have an opportunity to watch one team legend throw out a ceremonial first pitch.

Actually, the Astros announced late on Monday night that two former team legends will throw out ceremonial first pitches before Games 1 and 2.

Astros insider Chandler Rome reports that Jose Cruz gets the nod for Game 1's pregame celebration. A two-time All-Star and Silver Slugger winner, Cruz spent 13 years playing outfield in the organization. He played in Houston from 1975-1987 and ultimately collected 2,251 career hits and 1,077 RBIs.

Another outfielder will take center stage before Game 2. Terry Puhl spent 14 of his 15-year MLB career with Houston from 1977-1990. He earned one All-Star honor during that span and collected 1,361 career hits.

Game 1 of the ALDS is scheduled for 3:37 p.m. ET on Tuesday. Verlander squares off against Logan Gilbert of the Mariners. As it stands, Houston is considered a -230 favorite to take the 1-0 series lead and -235 odds to win the series, according to MLB Playoffs odds on FanDuel Sportsbook.
