49ers Had Shocking Medical Review of Christian McCaffrey After Trade

Updated:

San Francisco 49ers fans are filled with excitement now that their team traded for one of the NFL's best rushers, Christian McCaffrey. At the same time, you can't fault some fans for being concerned going forward since the 26-year-old has been injured more often than not in recent years.

As far as the 49ers themselves go, the organization isn't concerned about McCaffrey's health. In fact, the team had a shocking medical review of him following the trade, with head coach Kyle Shanahan telling KNBR that CMC has "the highest medical grade" of any player during his 49ers tenure.

Shanahan didn't stop with the compliments there. He added that he believes that McCaffrey is "back to full health" and "looks like the same guy as coming out of college." Shanahan even went as far as comparing CMC's toughness to that of teammate Nick Bosa, who's bounced back after tearing his ACL in 2020.

As Shanahan pointed out, McCaffrey didn't always carry an injury-prone tag. The Castle Rock, CO native played 37 games over three seasons at Stanford and didn't miss a single contest over his first three NFL seasons.

The string of good healthy ran out during the 2020 NFL campaign when ankle and shoulder injuries held McCaffrey to three appearances. Despite making what seemed like a full recovery, he just couldn't shake the injury bug in 2021, playing only seven games due to ankle and hamstring issues.

Fortunately for 49ers fans and the NFL as a product, McCaffrey seems to have put the injury woes behind him. He's already racked up 670 total yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns in six games, putting him on pace for nearly 1,900 yards and eight TDs across a full season.

It remains to be seen if McCaffrey will suit up for the 49ers when they host the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET.

Even if it's in a limited role, the 49ers could use CMC's help to land a win in Week 7. FanDuel Sportsbook currently lists the Chiefs as the slight 1.5-point favorites, giving them -115 odds to cover the spread at Levi's Stadium.
