4 Greatest Quarterbacks in Saints History

The New Orleans Saints have had the luxury of elite quarterback play for more than a decade now. With Drew Brees nearing the end of his career, however, older Saints fans may be having flashbacks to some of the other, significantly less exciting quarterbacks the team has had throughout the years.

It hasn't all been bad, however, and these are the four greatest quarterbacks in Saints history.

4. Aaron Brooks (2000-2005)

The early-2000's were a tough time for the Saints, as they were significantly set back by the disastrous Ricky Williams trade. This often overshadows the fact that Aaron Brooks put together some strong seasons under center. He's third in franchise history with 19,156 passing yards, as well as second with 120 touchdowns. A dual threat, Brooks also added 1,414 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground in his six years with the Saints.

3. Archie Manning (1971-1982)

Archie Manning is certainly more famous for his sons' accolades than for his play in New Orleans, but he was the first real franchise QB the Saints had, and that will forever earn him a spot in team lore. He amassed 91 losses in 134 career starts, but he still ranks second in team history with 21,734 passing yards.

2. Bobby Herbert (1985-1992)

Bobby Herbert is one spot behind Brooks with 14,630 passing yards, and his 85 career touchdowns are also fourth in franchise history. His individual play was rarely anything special, posting a career passer rating of 79.1, but he led the team to three 10-plus win seasons, helping the franchise earn its first ever playoff berth in 1987. The Dome Patrol defense was the real highlight of this era of Saints history, but Herbert certainly did his part to bring them success as well.

1. Drew Brees (2006-Present)

This one isn't even remotely close. Brees' 65,068 passing yards mean he's probably only one game away from having three times as many passing yards as Manning, and his 467 touchdowns are already more than three times better than the second-placed Brooks. More importantly, the Saints have been perennial contenders under Brees. He has a 133-83 record as a starter, and he earned the team their first Super Bowl win in 2009. Brees is a surefire Hall-of-Famer, and it's likely going to be a long time before anyone is able to challenge him on this list.
