3 Rockies Who Won't Be on the Roster at the Start of the 2023 Season

The Colorado Rockies weren't exactly billed as a World Series contender coming into the 2022 MLB season, but to see them at the bottom of the NL West is still a bit surprising. Colorado's record of 57-78 ranks as the sixth-worst mark in the National League and has fans already looking toward 2023.

Upgrading the roster in the offseason is a must if the Rockies want any shot of competing with the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres in the future. They need to create some space first, though, so here's a look at three Colorado players who won't be on the team next Opening Day.

Colorado Rockies Roster

1. Alex Colome, RP

The Rockies signed veteran reliever Alex Colome to a one-year deal last offseason with hopes that he could be their go-to setup man. He was able to provide that kind of help early on in the season, but his production has been getting worse and worse. Colome now owns a career-worst 4.74 ERA on the season to go along with a 1.60 WHIP and 2-7 record. Expect Colome to sign a cheap deal with a team in better position to contend next summer.

2. Chad Kuhl, SP

This is a tough one because Chad Kuhl has done everything the Rockies have asked him to this season. The simple fact is that he is still underperforming, though. The sixth-year pro owns a 5.19 ERA to go along with a 1.50 WHIP across 22 starts and cannot seem to get a grip on pitching at a hitter-friendly park like Coors Field. It doesn't help that the Rockies have players waiting in the wings for their call to the majors, too. Ryan Rolison, Karl Kauffmann and Peter Lambert are all expected to compete for a role in the rotation next year. That leaves Kuhl to test the market as a free agent.

3. Randal Grichuk, OF

While Colorado doesn't have many viable trade chips left on the roster, Randal Grichuk is one of them. The veteran outfielder is under contract through 2023 and it would be smart for the Rockies to at least test his market in the offseason. At 31 years of age, Grichuk doesn't help the Rockies when looking years ahead and could provide some much-needed OF depth for a contender. Grichuk is slashing .271/.313/..419 to go along with 50 runs scored, 20 doubles, 13 home runs and 60 RBI across 118 games. Getting a mid-level prospect back would make dealing Grichuk a worthwhile way to go here.
