3 Most Likely David Montgomery Free Agent Destinations

NFL free agency is just about a month away and set to kick off in mid-March. There are plenty of big names hitting the open market, so teams will be doing what they can to clear cap space and sign new players in hopes of improving in 2023.

The running back market is especially talented this offseason. Saquon Barkley clearly leads the pack, but he is widely expected to re-sign with the New York Giants. Guys like Miles Sanders, Tony Pollard, Josh Jacobs and David Montgomery have futures that are more up in the air.

The latter is a talented back that has begun to lose some of his workload in Chicago. While Montgomery's talents have always been highly regarded, the Bears might see this as the right time to move on from the former Iowa State product.

Let's take a look at three potential landing spots for Montgomery in free agency.

1. Carolina Panthers

The Carolina Panthers traded away their star franchise player Christian McCaffrey last season, which immediately jump-started their rebuild. Sure, they could bring back D'Onta Foreman, who ran the ball well in McCaffrey's absence last season, but he will surely want a raise. Chuba Hubbard has yet to show he can handle a full workload. Even if they want to bring back Foreman, adding a dual-threat like Montgomery to that backfield could create a really dangerous group. They'll have to clear a little bit of cap space first, but nothing too crazy (about $9 million).

2. New England Patriots

The New England Patriots have plenty of cap space -- the fifth-most in the NFL as of now. While they already have an effective back in Rhamondre Stevenson, Bill Belichick has always been a running-back-by-committee guy. Being able to add a versatile back like Montgomery to their backfield -- especially with Damien Harris as a free agent -- could be an attractive route for the Patriots. It also protects them against injury, as Montgomery has proven he can handle a heavy workload.

3. Buffalo Bills

The Bills have been searching for a true No. 1 running back for a while now. They have drafted guys and traded for guys, but no one has really stepped up to take over that role. Devin Singletary is a free agent, and Nyheim Hines is primarily a pass-catching back. While James Cook showed some real signs of life down the stretch in 2022, he might not be ready for a full workload yet. Bringing in a veteran like Montogmery could turn Buffalo's backfield into a true three-headed monster, similar to the one employed by the Philadelphia Eagles at the end of the season. The Bills would need to shed some serious cap to make it happen, but Montgomery would be worth it.
