Dark Horse Picks to Win the 2023 Sony Open on FanDuel Sportsbook

The PGA Tour continues from Maui and last week's 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions to Honolulu for the first full field event of the year and the Sony Open in Honolulu. A total of 144 players make up the tournament field with seven Top 25 players and 11 top 40 players in the world golf rankings.

The short, tight, positional 7,044 yard par 70 course at Waialae Country Club favors accuracy and many shorter hitters who don't have to give way to bigger bombers off the tee.

Russell Henley is a past champion who also finished runner-up in last year's event, losing in a playoff to Hideki Matsuyama. Those two top-35 players are among the leading favorites having also played last week, but still behind the three betting favorites to win the Sony Open - Tom Kim, Sungjae Im and Jordan Spieth.

But beyond the favorites, there are plenty of capable longshots and dark horses that could make a run at the leaderboard and come away with a higher finish or victory on Sunday. 1. Brian Harman (+2100)

Harman T-4 here in 2018 and led halfway through the tournament. He also has a pair of other top-15 finishes, but none since his best finish in 2018. The 35-year-old University of Georgia golfer fits well here with his elite driving accuracy (73%), approach play and strong stats in hitting greens. His form is strong with three top-10's and a T-16 last week in his last four events. Two of those were correlated coastal courses, and Harman fits in Honolulu.

2. Harris English (+4500)

Harris English is healthy again and has strong course credentials. Another University of Georgia golfer, the 33-year-old 4-time PGA Tour winner has been playing consistently well ahead of his 2023 debut. He's had past success in this event with three top-10 finishes, and his short game and putting strength give him an edge if his approach play is on.

3. J.J. Spaun (+4000)

17 of the last 24 Sony Open winners also played the week prior in the Sentry Tournament of Champions. J.J. Spaun finished T-5 last week in the TOC, and the 32-year-old also has three top-15 finishes in his previous three events to close 2022 including two on similar coastal courses. He's missed the cut in his last three visits to Waialae, but current form, stats and his accuracy and tee-to-green game suggests he can go well.
