Super Bowl Odds Update: Rodgers Out for Season, Lions Dispatch Champs

One week down; 17 more to go.

As you'd imagine, Aaron Rodgers tearing his left Achilles tendon on the opening offensive series for the New York Jets has made major reverberations throughout the league -- especially on the Super Bowl odds board.

Outside of the deflating news from New York, the NFL world was electrified in last week's season-opening road upset that included the Detroit Lions and reigning-champion Kansas City Chiefs. The contest in K.C. came down to the wire, but gutsy play-calling from Detroit head coach Dan Campbell ultimately made the winning difference.

Still, the collective offensive outpour from the Los Angeles Chargers and Miami Dolphins was my personal favorite contest of the weekend. I made the case a couple months back and still believe Tyreek Hill can be the first NFL wideout to be named league MVP.

In other showcase games from Week 1, the San Francisco 49ers rolled the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Cleveland Browns smothered the Cincinnati Bengals, and the Dallas Cowboys blanked the New York Giants.

With Week 2 officially upon us, I am looking forward to looming clashes featuring the Baltimore Ravens at Cincinnati, as well as the Jets at Dallas.

Before any of that, let's have a look at the current Super Bowl odds at FanDuel Sportsbook, keeping an eye out for significant market movement prior to Thursday Night Football with the Minnesota Vikings and Philadelphia Eagles.

Notable Jumps

Detroit Lions

FanDuel Sportsbook Odds: +1800

Everyone in the 313 is enthralled early on. Detroit's gritty efforts were on full display last week. The Lions went into Arrowhead and outlasted Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes and a short-handed Kansas City bunch, 21-20, on national television.

After the primetime showing, Motor City will have a tough time sneaking up on anyone, but given their strength in the trenches, the Lions must be considered as a true contender for the Lombardi Trophy. Keep in mind that Detroit closed last season by winning five of their final six games. These are not your father's Lions.

Cleveland Browns

FanDuel Sportsbook Odds: +1900

Cleveland's prowess over superstar quarterback Joe Burrow continued as the Browns routed the Bengals, 24-3, in Week 1. Naturally, all shops across the nation took notice as Cleveland's current odds to win the Super Bowl is at +1900 -- much shorter than their +3000 price at this time last week.

Against Cincinnati last Sunday, the ground game was strong in inclement weather for Cleveland, churning out 206 rushing yards. On the other side of the ball, their defense kept Burrow and the Bengals out of sync for four quarters. In Week 2, Cleveland will visit the division-rival Steelers on Monday Night Football. For that game, the Browns are currently favored by 1.5 points at FanDuel Sportsbook.

Miami Dolphins

FanDuel Sportsbook Odds: +1700

As previously alluded to, Miami electrified the Bolts in Week 1 behind 466 yards through the air. Hill was absolutely everywhere for the 'Fins, catching 11 passes in an MVP-esque showing. Naturally, the oddsmakers acted accordingly on Miami's clutch showing. At FanDuel Sportsbook, the Dolphins are now tied for the seventh-best odds to win Super Bowl LVIII.

In South Florida, much of the success will be tied to the health of signal-caller Tua Tagovailoa. Coming off a season where he had an issue sustaining concussions, Miami will need to prioritize protecting the quarterback above all else. Of course, the entire football world was just reminded of that in Bills-Jets on Monday.

Steep Drops

New York Jets

FanDuel Sportsbook Odds: +6500

Notably, under the bright lights of Monday Night Football at MetLife Stadium, Rodgers tore his left Achilles tendon on New York's first offensive drive of the season. The Jets rallied late to claim a walk-off overtime victory against the Buffalo Bills but ultimately lost the war upon learning of Rodgers' "out for the season" status. As such, NYJ went from Super Bowl-winning odds of +1800 (entering Week 1) at FanDuel Sportsbook to +6500 right now.

What's next for the J-E-T-S? There seems to be no immediate answer; many of the talking heads are thinking outside of the box by suggesting Tom Brady join New York (something that would have once been thought of as sacrilegious). However, head coach Robert Saleh's wisest move may be to stand pat. There's no time to waste; the Jets are now 9.5-point underdogs this Sunday in Dallas.

New York Giants

FanDuel Sportsbook Odds: +10000

On the heels of Rodgers' season-ending injury, it does actually seem as if many in the Big Apple have partially forgotten NYG's atrocious showing in the same stadium 24 hours prior. Well, the oddsmakers certainly took notice. Simply, there was nothing positive about the Giants -- who were a playoff team last year -- getting bleached 40-0 at the hands of rival Dallas.

Big Blue is now priced at +10000 to go all the way this season. Still, they are only 0-1 and have both franchise players on offense healthy at this point. On the other side, it was evident that the Giants lacked offensive rhythm, generating just 171 total yards in Week 1. Make no mistake that no sporting town had a rougher few days than New York City.

Chicago Bears

FanDuel Sportsbook Odds: +8500

The Chicago Bears were eager to start a new chapter in 2023 against the Green Bay Packers, being that the NFC North was finally without Rodgers in Wisconsin. However, things did not go according to plan for Chicago in last weekend's home opener. A quarterback not named Rodgers or Brett Favre -- Jordan Love -- lit up "Da Bears" for three scores and 245 yards through the air.

In the Midway, there is still hope to get right as long as dynamic quarterback Justin Fields is healthy. Fields was average in Week 1, but frankly, he will need to be far superior if Chicago has authentic hopes of making a title run. Future bettors always seem to love Fields and the Bears, so perhaps now while they are priced at +8500 odds to hoist the Lombardi Trophy is the time to get value on Chicago.
