NHL Daily Fantasy Helper and Betting Picks: Friday 11/24/23
NHL DFS is similar to MLB in terms of how you build lineups, how you view stacking, and how to value players.
Two main points to always focus on in NHL DFS are what lines the players are on and making sure the goalies you are rostering are confirmed as the starters.
Two of the best resources for that are LeftWingLock.com and DailyFaceOff.com. That is where you can find updated forward and power-play lines for each team, along with which goalies are confirmed as the starters.
Let's jump in and take a look at today's slate, find a goalie, some stacks, and some value plays for your NHL DFS lineups on FanDuel.
NHL DFS Picks
Goalie to Target
Alexandar Georgiev, Colorado Avalanche ($8,700)
The Colorado Avalanche come in as -134 road favorites and are set to take on a struggling Minnesota Wild squad.
The Wild have been far from consistent this season, and right now, they're on a downswing with their offense, which should put Alexandar Georgiev in a favorable matchup to come away with the win tonight.
Over the last two weeks, the Wild are scoring 2.01 goals per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations, which is the seventh-fewest in the league. During that same time, the Avalanche have really tightened up their defense and are only allowing 51.91 shot attempts per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations, which is the sixth-fewest in the league.
They aren't allowing opposing offenses to generate a ton of chances, which has allowed Georgiev to allow three goals or fewer in four of his last six starts, coming away with the win in each of those games.
The Avs do a great job of protecting their goalie, which should only further limit an offense that is currently struggling to get goals on the board.
Stacks
Carolina Hurricanes
With a slate-high 3.54 implied goal total, the Carolina Hurricanes are a clear team to target tonight.
A matchup against the Tampa Bay Lightning should lead to plenty of scoring for the Hurricanes, who are among the best in the league right now.
During the last two weeks, the Hurricanes sit in the top five of the league in goals scored (3.44) and total shot attempts created (68.78), both per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations.
As for the Lightning, they are allowing 3.04 goals in the same situations over the last two weeks, which is the eighth-most in the league.
We'll look directly to the Canes' top forward line, who also skate together on the first power-play unit, giving us full correlation.
That starts with Sebastian Aho ($6,600), Teuvo Teravainen ($5,700), and Seth Jarvis ($5,400). Over the last five games, they come in with a total of 16 NHL points and 27 shots on goal. Also, look to add defenseman Brent Burns ($6,000) with his 5 NHL points and 10 shots on goal in the last five games.
Vancouver Canucks
The Vancouver Canucks are the league's highest-scoring team and are always a stack worth targeting.
Through 20 games this season, the Canucks have scored 80 goals -- 10 more than the next-highest team. They can put goals on the board in a hurry and are doing so via 2.94 goals ccored per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations, which is the eighth-best clip in the league.
They have also scored a whopping 22 power-play goals this season, which are the second-most in the league. Tonight, that could be on full display since they are taking on the Seattle Kraken, who are in the top 10 of the league for the most penalty minutes this season.
Over the last two weeks, the Kraken are allowing 2.66 goals per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations, which is the 13th-most.
This is a powder keg waiting to explode with goals, and it points us to the Canucks' top unit. That starts with Elias Pettersson ($9,100), J.T. Miller ($9,500), Quinn Hughes ($8,300), and Brock Boeser ($7,800).
The first three all sit in the top six of the entire NHL for the most points scored this season, while Boeser has 22 and is tied for the 16th-most. They have immense fantasy upside every night and are well worth the salary today.
Value Skaters
Jamie Benn, W, Dallas Stars ($5,300)
The Dallas Stars have a 3.06 implied total against the Calgary Flames, who are a bit of a mess this season.
The lack of consistency for the Flames is very clear this season, and it's led to them allowing the ninth-most (2.92) goals per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations. With that lack of defense, we have seen 11 of their 19 games hit the over, which is a good indication that they get into fantasy-friendly matchups.
We'll turn Jamie Benn, who skates on the third forward line and the first power-play unit for the Stars. He comes in with 13 NHL points, 32 shots on goal, and 13 blocked shots in 18 games this season. While Benn isn't a high-volume shooter, his point-per-dollar value is there in a solid plus matchup tonight.
Brandon Montour, D, Florida Panthers ($4,600)
After making his season debut just last week, Brandon Montour is still a value option to consider.
With a deep run to the Stanley Cup Finals last season, an offseason surgery set Mountour's season debut back a few weeks. He has just three games under his belt this year, with a total of four shots and four blocked shots.
Of course, there's not much we can take from that, but his role and potential upside are more important. Montour returned to the lineup and was immediately placed as the defender on the first power-play unit, which was his role from last season.
Last year, he set a career-high in points (73), goals (16) assists (57), shots on goal (242), and his second-highest blocked shots (93). Montour's fantasy potential is immense due to his ability to fill up the stat sheet in multiple areas.
With a 6.5-goal over/under on tap against the Winnipeg Jets, Montour should have plenty of chances to pile up fantasy points in different categories and get back on track to the level he showed last season.
NHL Best Bets
Pittsburgh Penguins at Buffalo Sabres
Penguins Moneyline (-115)
Despite being 1-3 in their last four games, the Pittsburgh Penguins are playing some good hockey right now.
Hockey is a weird sport sometimes and can lead to flukey results despite good performances. That is what we're seeing at the moment with the Penguins, who are in a bounce-back spot against the Buffalo Sabres.
The Sabres have been a mid-tier defense in recent weeks with 2.52 goals allowed per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations, putting them at 18th in the league.
Over the last two weeks, the Penguins are only allowing 2.02 goals per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations, which is the fourth-fewest in the NHL. Not allowing goals is awesome, but as I mentioned, they have just won one time in their last four games.
Their goal-scoring rate has slipped during this time to the 10th-lowest (2.22) in the league but is underperforming in a big way.
The Penguins are generating 66.58 shot attempts in five-on-five situations over the last two weeks but are scoring the 10th-fewest goals. That simply doesn't add up, and if we look at their Expected Goals Scored (xGF), they are up at 2.93, which is the eighth-highest in the league.
Their offense is doing the right things when it comes to creating chances -- they just can't find the back of the net. That positive regression is due to hit and should lead to plenty of goals for the Pens tonight.
Vancouver Canucks at Seattle Kraken
Canucks Moneyline (-114)
As noted above, the Canucks are the league's highest-scoring offense and can put up goals in a hurry.
With 27 points in 20 games, Vancouver has the fourth-most points in the league as well as the most (80) goals scored. Mix in the ninth-fewest (51) goals allowed this season, and you have all the makings of an elite team in all areas on the ice.
Tonight, a matchup against the Kraken should see the Canucks right the ship after losing three of their last four games.
Over the last two weeks, there have been two noticeable trends, one for each team. The Canucks are underproducing goals, and the Kraken are overproducing goals.
Vancouver is currently scoring 1.77 goals per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations, which is very low compared to their mark of 3.01 Expected Goals Scored. Seattle is scoring 2.84 goals in the same situations, compared to their 2.39 Expected Goals Scored.
The Canucks still have the best offense in the league despite a decrease in recent production, and that offense is due for some serious positive regression. Plus, they have a very strong defense, one that should be able to handle an opposing offense that is overproducing goals right now.
