NHL Betting Picks for Wednesday 2/7/24: Can We Bet on the League's Worst Team Tonight?

There are just three games on Wednesday, as some teams are still on their bye week. We still should be able to find some winners tonight.

Whether it's moneylines or total goals, there are plenty of ways to bet on the NHL action all season. It's a long 82-game campaign, meaning that the best selections of each night can be very different based on backup goalies coming into play, injuries that add up, and if teams are due for positive or negative swings.

Let's dive into the best bets for tonight.

NHL Best Bets

Tampa Bay Lightning at New York Rangers

Rangers Moneyline (-122)

A rematch of the 2022 Eastern Conference Finals, the Tampa Bay Lightning visit the New York Rangers tonight. These teams are both playoff contenders, and it should lead to an interesting matchup.

The Lightning have been more up and down this season than they have been in years past. They were without Andrei Vasilevskiy in the net for the beginning of the season. Even when he's played, he hasn't been the all-world goalie that we've seen before. His goals saved above expected (GSAx) per 60 minutes is only .098, which has him 30th in the NHL.

Goaltending is all the talk around the Rangers right now after Jonathan Quick put in another great performance on Monday. There have been calls for him to be considered the starter, as he is third in GSAx per 60 minutes in the league. Whether or not he becomes the starter isn't totally relevant, but he will bring his solid play to the crease tonight.

The Rangers have the edge at five-on-five, as their expected goal (xG) rate (50.25%) is better than Tampa's (49.33%). Add that to their goaltending edge, and they look like they should be able to get the win.

Tampa has really struggled on the road this season. Their record away from home is 10-13-2. That doesn't bode well against a Rangers team that's 16-7-0 at home.

The model on numberFire gives this bet two stars, so it definitely makes sense to back the Rangers tonight.

Minnesota Wild at Chicago Blackhawks

Blackhawks Moneyline (+176)

This is a bet that some people refer to as a "hold your nose" bet. That's because it's one that has some stink on it.

That will apply to any bet on the Chicago Blackhawks probably for the rest of the season. The Blackhawks are now dead last in the league with just 30 points in 50 games, and they have lost four in a row. There are some reasons to be somewhat optimistic about them in this spot, though.

Their opponent tonight hasn't exactly been great this season, either. They'll face the Minnesota Wild, who are 13th in the West and have lost their last two games.

Chicago actually has the advantage at goalie, which is something very important to consider when betting an underdog this big. Petr Mrazek has 6.8 GSAx this season, compared to -2.3 GSAx for Filip Gustavsson.

The Blackhawks' home record is actually a respectable 10-11-1, whereas they have a dreadful 4-23-1 road record. They should be able to compete in this game, so getting the price of +176 is really nice in a matchup that should be close.

numberFire's model loves the Blackhawks in this spot, rating their moneyline as a three-star bet tonight. It may make you hold your nose before the game, but it could pay off after it's over.
