NFL Preseason Week 1: One Thing to Watch in Each Game This Weekend
Fans of football, rejoice: the NFL is (kind of) back this weekend. We'll get to see each and every NFL team take the field for the first preseason games of the year this week.
While preseason games don't count record-wise, there are still plenty of things we can learn from these matchups. These next few weeks can play a pivotal role in determining depth charts, giving savvy fans who keep their eyes out for the right information a glimpse into the future. With that in mind, here's one thing to watch for each preseason game this weekend.

Tennessee Titans at Chicago Bears
A First Look at Will Levis
There were those in NFL Draft circles that had Kentucky quarterback Will Levis pegged as an early first-round pick after his final college season, so his slide out of the first round of the draft came as a bit of a surprise. He didn't have to wait long on Day 2 of the draft, though, as the Tennessee Titans traded up to make him the 33rd overall pick of the event.
Heading into his rookie season, Levis is expected to be the backup to the incumbent starter, Ryan Tannehill, with an eye toward becoming the team's quarterback of the future.
Levis had good moments and bad moments against SEC competition, so his first test against legit NFL defenses could go a long way toward projecting the trajectory of his career in the pros. A good enough performance against the Chicago Bears on Saturday could even put him in line for starts during the upcoming regular season if Tannehill struggles with injuries again in 2023.
Indianapolis Colts at Buffalo Bills
Will Anthony Richardson Be QB1 for Indy?
There is perhaps no rookie more exciting for the upcoming 2023 season than new Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson. That he started only one season for the Florida Gators means he's a raw prospect, but Richardson tested through the roof athletically at the NFL Combine earlier this year and is arguably the most athletic quarterback prospect of all-time.
Colts owner Jim Irsay has stated that he wants Richardson to get as many starting reps as possible, meaning we could see a healthy volume of snaps from the rookie in the preseason.
FanDuel Sportsbook gives him the third-best odds (+900) to take home the Offensive Rookie of the Year award this season, but his performance on Saturday against the Buffalo Bills could sway those odds in either direction.
New York Jets at Carolina Panthers
Can Bryce Young Hang in the NFL?
We just touched on one rookie passer from the SEC, and this game features another: Panthers' new starter Bryce Young.
Young more than earned his spot as the first overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft after putting up back-to-back seasons of elite production at Alabama. We're excited to see him take the field in the preseason.
The biggest, and perhaps only, knock on Young is his size. At 5'10" and 204 pounds, Young is noticeably smaller than many of his NFL counterparts. We'll want to make sure he can physically hold up to the rigors of the NFL before getting too excited for him as a player, and the preseason is the perfect place to watch that unfold.
He'll square off against a worthy opponent on Saturday, as well, with the New York Jets preparing to field one of the league's best defenses again in 2023.
Young's Panthers have the third-best odds (+360) to win a wide open NFC South this year, per the NFL division odds at FanDuel Sportsbook.
Jacksonville Jaguars at Dallas Cowboys
Were the Jags a One-Year Wonder?
Fans of the Jacksonville Jaguars have been trained against getting their hopes up over the last 20 or so years -- they can count on one hand the number of winning seasons the franchise has produced since the turn of the millennium. But their fates could be changing with franchise quarterback Trevor Lawrence under center for the foreseeable future.
The Jags don't have too many positional battles to sort out this preseason, but fans would rest easier if they play well against their Saturday night foes, the Dallas Cowboys.
The Jags went just 9-8 last season but were able to take down a playoff game in the postseason. According to the NFL division odds at FanDuel Sportsbook, the Jaguars are heavy favorites (-155) to win the AFC South. Only two teams -- the Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars -- are a bigger division favorite than Jacksonville is.
Philadelphia Eagles at Baltimore Ravens
The Ravens' New-Look Offense
The Ravens weren't too excited to put many starters on the field in the 2022 preseason (understandable, considering the injury woes the team has dealt with over the past few years), but this preseason, they could trot out more than a few faces we'll look forward to seeing on Sundays later this year.
They're installing a new offensive system for the first time in years under new OC Todd Monken and may want to get some live reps against the Philadelphia Eagles' deep defense under their belts before Week 1.
I am most excited to see how that system treats the Ravens' wideouts. Notably, 2023 first-round pick Zay Flowers could get his first taste of NFL action. He'll have to compete for targets this year alongside Rashod Bateman and Odell Beckham, but he currently has the fourth-best odds (+950) to lead all rookies in receiving yards.
Los Angeles Chargers "at" Los Angeles Rams
Will Any Starters End Up Playing?
The Los Angeles Chargers and Los Angeles Rams share more than just a stadium -- they have shared a number of their coaches, as well. Following the Rams' success under Sean McVay in recent years, the Chargers hired away former Rams defensive coordinator Brandon Staley to be their head coach. Both coaches have had a tendency to rest their starters in the preseason, so it's really not clear which players we'll actually see suit up on Saturday.
That said, the Rams don't have much depth behind their elite top-end players, so guys like Tutu Atwell and Puka Nakua (whom the team has invested relatively solid draft capital into in recent years) could push for starting jobs with strong enough preseason performances.
NFL Preseason Week 1 Betting Odds -- Sunday
Teams | Spread | Total | Time (ET) |
---|---|---|---|
Chiefs at Saints | NO -3 (-120) | 37.5 | 1:00 |
49ers at Raiders | SF -4 (-110) | 35.5 | 4:00 |
Kansas City Chiefs at New Orleans Saints
Is There a KC Receiver to Rely On?
The Kansas City Chiefs allowed JuJu Smith-Schuster to walk in free agency following their Super Bowl victory in February, leaving the roster with a number of question marks at the wide receiver position. We all know All-Pro Travis Kelce is a superstar, but can any of the team's other pass-catchers become fantasy-relevant this year?
Marquez Valdes-Scantling will likely lead the team's receivers in snaps but is a relatively known quantity in fantasy circles -- he's a boom-or-bust kind of guy. But behind him, players such as Skyy Moore and rookie Rashee Rice could fight for a starting job, and we generally want players from the best passing offense in the league on our fantasy squads. A strong preseason from either of those two receivers could cause a massive spike in their projections for season-long fantasy football.
The New Orleans Saints probably won't have to worry about spending too much time defending against Patrick Mahomes in this first preseason game, but folks with fantasy football in mind will want to pay attention to any other standouts on the Chiefs' side of the ball.
San Francisco 49ers at Las Vegas Raiders
The 49ers' QB Situation
Another year, another series of questions about the state of the San Francisco 49ers's quarterback room.
It's looking like Brock Purdy has a lock on the starting job for Week 1, and he seems unlikely to see much preseason action while he works back from the elbow injury he suffered in the NFC Championship game earlier this year. But behind him, we might actually see more of Trey Lance this preseason than we've seen so far in his two years in the league.
Lance barely played as a rookie, filling in behind Jimmy Garoppolo when needed. He was set to start in his second year but suffered a brutal season-ending leg injury in Week 2 of that campaign. The former third-overall pick could stand to benefit from a strong preseason, and he may get a chance to prove himself against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.
