NFL Offensive Player of the Year Betting: It'll Be Business as Usual for Davante Adams

There is no disputing -- Davante Adams of the Las Vegas Raiders is one of the most electric playmakers football has to offer.

Adams has led the NFL in touchdown receptions in two of the past three years (2022, 2020), doing it with different quarterbacks in opposite conferences. When it comes to having multiple elite-level receiver traits, Adams is tough to beat right now.

The AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year odds at FanDuel Sportsbook have Adams at +2800 for the upcoming campaign, leaving him tied with quarterback Josh Allen for 13th-best odds in the market. Ja'Marr Chase (+1200) is the outright OPOY favorite in 2023.

Adams has been named to six consecutive Pro Bowls while capping his three most recent seasons with a trio of NFL First-Team All-Pro nods. Arguably, he is the best wide receiver in the league.

Let's have a look at Adams' OPOY case for 2023-24.

WR History With This Award

Adams happens to play one of the trendiest spots in football, as there are few things in sports more thrilling than someone catching a 50-yard touchdown pass. Wide receivers currently have high stocks throughout the league; the position has won the NFL Offensive Player of the Year award two years running and in three of the past four campaigns.

Justin Jefferson went absolutely nuts in 2022, producing a staggering 128 catches for 1,809 yards -- both figures led the league. Jefferson was an easy choice for the most recent OPOY and has +1400 odds to repeat.

The 2021 OPOY winner was Cooper Kupp. Behind a season that eventually led to a Super Bowl LVI crown, Kupp shined en route to earning a receiving "Triple Crown," topping all other wideouts in receptions (145), yards (1,947) and touchdowns (16). Kupp finished third for the 2021 AP NFL Most Valuable Player. To date, no wide receiver has ever won the league MVP award.

The other recent wideout to be named OPOY was Michael Thomas of the New Orleans Saints. In Drew Brees' penultimate year (2019), Thomas set the NFL single-season catch record with 149 receptions.

Even with Jimmy Garoppolo as the potential quarterback in Vegas, Adams is still capable of this high-end production. From his time in New England, Garoppolo will be familiar with head coach Josh McDaniels' system, which will surely feature Adams again. Remember: Adams caught 14 scores in his only season in Silver and Black so far.

An Itch for the End Zone

As mentioned, Adams is a touchdown magnet regardless of who is throwing the ball or where the offense is on the field.

Having spent time with Aaron Rodgers and Derek Carr, Adams has particularly excelled at catching the long ball. In 2022, he was tied with Tyreek Hill for the NFL lead in receptions of 40-plus yards (7). Of course, we all remember Adams' 35-yard walk-off touchdown in overtime at the Denver Broncos last year.

Adams' elite-level production is anything but a flash in the pan. Through each of the last seven seasons, Adams has failed to catch double-digit scores only once. In 2023, he will have the chance to join the triple-digit touchdown reception club. If Adams can haul in 13 or more touchdowns next season, he will be only the 11th player ever with at least 100 touchdown catches. Naturally, he leads all active players in that category (unless Rob Gronkowski miraculously unretires).

Adams' 1,516 receiving yards with 14 scores last year would have gotten him more love in the OPOY market in most seasons. Still, there was/is no argument to be made against Jefferson's 2022 campaign. Another output similar to 2022 for Adams with his third quarterback in as many seasons should turn heads around the league.

Outside of quarterback, the Raiders have significant talent around Adams on offense. Josh Jacobs was the NFL's most recent rushing king (1,653 yards) while Hunter Renfrow and Jakobi Meyers are both quality receivers. Additionally, the Raiders just drafted former Notre Dame star tight end Michael Mayer. Adams -- even as the No. 1 option in the offense -- should find his share of favorable spots to work in.

Conclusion

Adams has been one of the game's most exciting wide receivers of the current generation. He does most things well at the position and consistently makes circus catches in tight spots. When you see him move in person, it is easy to see that he is just different.

No receiver has found the end zone more frequently than Adams over the past three seasons. To go further out, Adams has the most total touchdown catches of any player since 2011 (87) despite not entering the league until 2014.

Through Rodgers, Carr and even Jarrett Stidham, Adams' play has never wavered. Some receivers rely on a difference-making quarterback to be great, but that statement does not pertain to Adams. With Garoppolo in 2023, Adams should continue to be the baller that he is.

Worth mentioning, only twice in NFL history has a Raider been named AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year: Marcus Allen in 1985 and Ken Stabler in 1974.

Yielding +2800 odds at FanDuel Sportsbook, Adams seems like a solid option in the 2023-24 OPOY market.
