Copa America 2024 Betting: Who Will Lead USA in Goals?

Copa America 2024 kicks off tonight, and it should be an exciting tournament.

The top teams from CONCACAF -- the United States, Mexico, Canada, Jamaica, Costa Rica, and Panama -- join 10 teams from CONMEBOL to form a 16-team field headlined by Argentina and Brazil.

The United States (11th in FIFA's World Rankings) was drawn into Group C, alongside Uruguay (14th), Panama (43rd), and Bolivia (84th).

USA's first match is on Sunday, June 23rd at 6 p.m. EST against Bolivia.

Today, let's take a look at the USA Top Goalscorer market being offered on FanDuel Sportsbook and see who is favored to lead the stars and stripes in goals this summer.

Christian Pulisic (+380)

Christian Pulisic was excellent at the 2022 World Cup, with a goal and two assists operating on the left wing. In the six friendlies he has appeared in since then, he has combined for four goals and one assist -- playing primarily at forward.

Pulisic is coming off an exceptional season for AC Milan. He combined for 15 goals and 8 assists from 11.0 xG, per FBref, and 4.8 expected assists. Both marks were career highs.

In the best form of his career and operating at the heart of USA's attack, Pulisic is a deserving favorite to lead them in goals at Copa America.

Haji Wright (+470)

Haji Wright made four appearances for USA at the 2022 World Cup and scored their only goal against the Netherlands in the Round of 16.

He enters Copa America coming off a decent season for Coventry City in the Championship, the second tier of English soccer. In 44 appearances, he scored 16 goals from 18.3 xG and 6 assists from 4.6 xAG. He added three more goals in five appearances in the FA Cup.

A major concern for Wright in this market is playing time. With Pulisic and Timothy Weah expected to start out wide, there is only one starting spot remaining up front. In their two most recent friendlies against Brazil and Colombia, that spot went to Ricardo Pepi and Folarin Balogun, respectively.

The United States' expected path through Copa America sees them facing either Brazil or Colombia in the Quarterfinals. They would likely be an underdog against Colombia and would certainly be one against Brazil. With those difficult fixtures looming, and a tricky third match in the Group Stage against Uruguay, playing time in the first two matches -- versus Bolivia and Panama -- could be crucial.

If Wright doesn't earn a surprise start, he will have to make a major impact coming off the bench.

Folarin Balogun (+500)

Balogun burst onto the scene in 2022-23 when he scored 21 goals in 37 appearances while on loan at Reims from Arsenal. Eligible to play for England, Nigeria, or the USA, Balogun formally committed to the USA in May of 2023.

After a transfer to Monaco, Balogun had a decent 2023-24 season but was unable to match the heights he achieved while with Reims. He recorded 7 goals from 11.5 xG and 5 assists from 3.3 xAG in 29 appearances.

The expectation is that he will lead the attack this summer -- he started five of six matches for the United States over the last year. If he does, he has the talent to lead the stars and stripes in goals.

Pulisic's role as the primary set piece taker, including penalty kicks, makes it a more difficult task but one Balogun is capable of if given the opportunity.

Josh Sargent (+600)

Josh Sargent has the potential to disrupt the previously mentioned duo of Balogun and Pepi, but he is currently injured. He missed the friendlies against Colombia and Brazil, and he is a doubt for Copa America, due to a "nagging foot injury". He did make the final roster, but his status remains uncertain.

If Sargent isn't held back by injury, he has a chance to continue the excellent form he displayed for Norwich City in the Championship this season. After missing the first four months with an ankle injury, he returned to score 16 goals (12.1 xG) in 26 matches played.

Ricardo Pepi (+650)

Pepi appeared in all six friendlies for the USA over the last year but only started one -- the most recent match against Brazil. The substitute role is one he is familiar with from his time with PSV in the Eredivisie this season where he appeared in 27 matches but started just one. He was excellent in the role, recording 1.30 goals/90.

As is the case for all the strikers on the United States, his outlook in this market will be heavily impacted by playing time. For Pepi, his recent performances have shown that even if he doesn't start, he is capable and even excels at making an impact off the bench.

Gio Reyna (+650)

Reyna's lack of playing time at the 2022 World Cup was a major story. Coming off several decent seasons for Dortmund, Reyna was held to just two appearances off the bench in Qatar, totaling 52 minutes.

After he was retained as the head coach, Gregg Berhalter has started to reverse course on that decision. Reyna has started four of six friendlies over the last year, including the most recent two against Colombia and Brazil -- operating as a central midfielder.

Reyna's club season didn't go according to plan. After a loan move to the Premier League with Nottingham Forest, he recorded just one assist in nine appearances.

At his best, Reyna brings a creative element to the Untied States midfield that increases the goal scoring opportunities for both himself and the forwards playing in front of him.
