Cleveland Remains a Strong Favorite to Win the NBA's Central Division

After another interesting NBA All-Star Weekend, teams will enjoy their last couple nights of rest before resuming regular-season action.

Between the league's six respective divisions, the Central has offered myriad storylines this year. Additionally, the Central is a proud grouping, but in 2024, it's largely come down to a three-way race for the crown.

Currently, the Cleveland Cavaliers are sitting atop the division. From there, we see the Milwaukee Bucks and Indiana Pacers well within striking distance. At the bottom, the Chicago Bulls are under .500 while the Detroit Pistons have somehow won less than 10 total games.

Considering we are now on the other side of St. Valentine's Day, we have less than two months before postseason play begins. In the interim, let's check out the NBA's Central Division odds market.

Cleveland Cavaliers (-490)

In 2024, Cleveland brings together a squad that has a potent blend of youth and experience. Led by dynamic scorer Donovan Mitchell (28.4 PPG), the Cavs have shined en route to a 36-17 record. Head coach J.B. Bickerstaff has come a long way with this group.

As a franchise still looking for success in its post-LeBron James era, Cleveland has morphed into one of the top defensive sides in the Association. Heading into the second half, the Cavaliers have suffocated opponents into just 109.2 PPG this season (second-best); rim-protector Jarrett Allen sets the tone on D.

"Believeland" did well to win 18 of 20 games heading into All-Star Weekend. Of course, that was highlighted by a nine-game winning streak between January and February. Simply, the Cavs were the NBA's hottest team before the break.

The Cavaliers will resume play Thursday at home versus the Orlando Magic. For that bid, Cleveland is a 7.5-point home favorite at FanDuel Sportsbook.

Despite showing -490 odds to win the Central Division, the Cavs are only 2.5 games ahead of Milwaukee in second place. Considering there are approximately 27 regular-season contests remaining, "locks" do not exist here.

Milwaukee Bucks (+350)

Speaking of the Bucks, it has been a bombastic campaign in Southeastern Wisconsin. After trading for star point guard Damian Lillard, Milwaukee has competed to a 35-21 overall record this season. That is good enough for third place among the Eastern Conference, but in the Central, they reside in Cleveland's shadow.

Surprisingly, the Bucks and Cavs will not meet again unless it is in the playoffs. On the year, all four head-to-head games came prior to All-Star Weekend; the division rivals split that batch 2-2.

Lest we forget, Milwaukee is still led by a prime Giannis Antetokounmpo. As a two-time league MVP, the "Greek Freak" has benefitted from -- most importantly -- good health in 2023-24, missing just two games. From there, Giannis has averaged 30.8 PPG through the first half, which is currently the Eastern Conference's top mark.

At numberFire, the power rankings have Milwaukee (62.1 nERD) tied for seventh overall. That still leaves them two spots behind Cleveland (69.2 nERD), but as mentioned, the Bucks are nipping at their heels. With 26 contests left to play, a 2.5-game divisional deficit is not substantial.

Before the second half commences, Milwaukee is priced with +350 odds at FanDuel Sportsbook to win the Central Division. Of Central teams, they have the shortest odds (+650) to win the upcoming NBA title. Still, can recently appointed head coach Doc Rivers find the winning formula?

Indiana Pacers (+5000)

For a longshot wager with outside value, Indiana could sneak up on the competition here. Right now, the Pacers are 31-25, which lands them sixth in the Eastern Conference. With head coach Rick Carlisle at the helm, this squad must be respected.

Within the Central, Indiana is situated confidently in third place. They are currently 6.5 games behind Cleveland, but with 50-to-1 odds in the divisional market, the Pacers are absolutely worth a second look.

Notably, Indy is fast and furious on offense. In 2023-24, the Pacers pace the entire league in total scoring, having produced 123.7 PPG. If the season concluded today, that would be the fourth-highest single-season clip in NBA history.

Back at numberFire, the NBA power rankings have Indiana (51.6 nERD) rated a bit further down at 17th overall. Transparently, defense in the "Circle City" has been porous. Through 56 games, the Pacers have given up 122.3 PPG to opponents. Newly acquired Pascal Siakam could help with that.

Guard Tyrese Haliburton has thrived since being traded to Indy two seasons ago. In that time, Haliburton has twice been named an All-Star. At the moment, he is the Pacers top scorer at 21.8 PPG. Additionally, Hali has dished out a whopping 11.7 APG -- tops in the NBA.
