AL Rookie of the Year Betting: We've Got a Three-Way Race
Throughout the 2023 MLB season, the American League Rookie of the Year race has been rather competitive.
There have been many impressive rooks throughout the AL in the current campaign, but the race has seemingly narrowed to three players: Josh Jung of the Texas Rangers, Masataka Yoshida of the Boston Red Sox and Gunnar Henderson of the Baltimore Orioles.
Of course, with approximately 70 games left in the season, it's entirely possible a different name emerges in the second half -- but I would not say it is likely.
Let's run through the three leaders -- according to the odds at FanDuel Sportsbook -- and also glance at one long shot.

Josh Jung, 3B, Rangers
FanDuel Sportsbook Odds: +135
As a rookie, Jung rightfully earned the starting nod at the hot corner in the 2023 Midsummer Classic. Notably, he is the first-ever rook to start the MLB All-Star Game at third base for the AL; Eddie Kazak (1949) of the St. Louis Cardinals is the only player to accomplish that feat in the National League.
Through the first half, Jung blasted 19 home runs while producing 56 RBI. His batting average on balls in play (BABIP) is at a lofty .350 right now, so there's been some good fortune, but his 62 runs scored leads all American League rookies. Jung has done his fair share to contribute to the AL West-leading Rangers, and there are numerous studs on his team to keep him in favorable spots. Texas set a franchise record in 2023 with five All-Star Game starters.
There's no denying how good he's been so far in 2023.
Masataka Yoshida, OF/DH, Red Sox
FanDuel Sportsbook Odds: +290
As a bright spot in Boston's lineup, Yoshida has been one of the American League's most consistent batters. Collecting 95 hits so far in 2023, he is tied with Alex Verdugo for second-most hits on the Red Sox, while Yoshida's .382 on-base percentage (OBP) leads the club.
Yoshida plays an efficient brand of baseball. His OPS is currently at .874 while he is striking out in only 10.7% of his plate appearances.
Yoshida's +290 AL Rookie of the Year odds seem somewhat valuable at the moment, but Jung currently has better offensive numbers in most metrics.
Gunnar Henderson, SS/3B, Orioles
FanDuel Sportsbook Odds: +290
Henderson is a 6-foot-3 infielder with sky-high potential. In his rookie year, he has been part of a surge that's seen the O's become legit contenders. So far, he somewhat resembles a young Manny Machado -- only as a left-handed hitter.
In 2023, Henderson is making solid contact. His current Statcast hard-hit rate is 53.7%, which is impressive -- rookie or not. With other young talent hitting around him like Adley Rutschman and Anthony Santander, Henderson should frequently find himself in advantageous situations.
Henderson's +290 odds are currently the same as his division rival Yoshida's -- keep an eye on how they do in head-to-head games down the stretch.
Anthony Volpe, SS, Yankees
FanDuel Sportsbook Odds: +5000
Despite being down at the sixth-best odds (+5000) in the AL ROY market, Anthony Volpe of the New York Yankees deserves a mention.
Volpe's overall season-long numbers are bogged down by a brutal May where he hit .174 with a .252 weighted on-base average (wOBA), and he's clearly a long shot right now.
He's been better since, though, and has been surging of late, smacking three homers through 39 July plate appearances. For the year, he's also got 16 steals and has been caught just twice. The recent run has helped Volpe get moved up in the order, and he hit leadoff in three of four games prior to the break. If he can stay atop the order, Volpe's counting stats will get a boost.
If he turns it on even more and the Pinstripes make a second-half push, Volpe could get back into the race, and it certainly doesn't hurt his case that he plays for one of baseball's headline teams.
