4 FanDuel Stacks to Target in Week 16
Stacking in daily fantasy football on FanDuel is a key strategy and a way to shoot for upside. There are a few different ways to correlate lineups that can help us maximize our ceiling.
The classic stack is a quarterback with one of his pass-catchers. Sometimes, it makes sense to use two pass catchers with their signal-caller, especially when the target share is concentrated around two players.
In other situations, we can pair a running back and a defense on the same team. This makes sense when a team is a huge favorite and expected to dominate, which can lead to carries for the back and chances for sacks and turnovers for the D/ST. We also can look to deploy a game stack -- rostering a QB, one of his pass-catchers, and a pass-catcher from the other team. Game stacks can work best in matchups that have high totals and close spreads.
Our Brandon Gdula did a study on stacking that is worth checking out before you make your lineups.
Here are four of the best stacks to zero in on in NFL DFS for this week's main slate.
Chicago Bears
Justin Fields ($8,300) and D.J. Moore ($8,200)
The Chicago Bears may not have anything to play for, but Justin Fields definitely does. With the Bears potentially having the first overall pick in the draft, Fields is either auditioning to keep his job with the Bears or find a new place where he can start.
There aren't many better spots for him to increase his value than playing against the Arizona Cardinals. They have the 31st-ranked pass defense in the league, according to numberFire's schedule-adjusted metrics. They've also allowed the second-most adjusted fantasy points per drop back to signal callers.
Fields didn't have the best game last week against the Cleveland Browns, who have the best pass defense per nF. Before that, Fields had averaged 20.7 fantasy points per game in his last six starts.
His favorite target is clearly D.J. Moore. Moore has seen a 28% target share on the season but also has exceeded a 40% share in three individual games. A receiver who sees that kind of volume has huge upside and could potentially catch a lot of passes. The matchup is good for Moore, as well. Arizona ranks 30th in adjusted fantasy points per target to receivers.
This stack is a fun one because both players have the upside needed to lead a tournament-winning lineup if they reach their ceilings.
Minnesota Vikings
Nick Mullens ($7,000) and Justin Jefferson ($9,200)
Nick Mullens being an actual option this week sort of epitomizes the quarterback situation we've seen in the 2023 NFL season.
If you dig deep, it doesn't seem that crazy. Mullens had 19.1 fantasy points last week in his first start of the season. He has been an acceptable starter at times in the past -- especially if he has the weapons to utilize.
It's hard to get a better weapon than Justin Jefferson -- arguably the best receiver in the NFL. Jefferson saw 30% of the targets last week in his first full game since Week 4. He didn't have the same fantasy day as teammate Jordan Addison, but Jefferson saw more targets and air yards. They each had one end zone target, so there's nothing to suggest that Addison is a better bet than JJ for a score this week.
The Minnesota Vikings are at home against the Detroit Lions. Detroit has a defense that funnels opponents to the pass. They rank 9th against the run but 28th against air attacks. They're also 28th in adjusted fantasy points per drop back to quarterbacks.
This game has the second-highest total on the main slate this week, and being indoors could make this game a shootout environment in which Mullens and Jefferson both go off.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Baker Mayfield ($7,300), Mike Evans ($8,700), and Chris Godwin ($6,900)
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have the potential to win the NFC South despite their record sitting at just 7-7. They've won three games in a row to get into this position.
The Bucs won last week off the back of Baker Mayfield's best performance as a member of the team. He had 381 yards and four touchdowns. The thesis behind Mayfield this season was always that he would be fine if he could get the ball to his two elite receivers, and he did that in Week 15.
Mayfield connected with Chris Godwin 10 times for 155 yards, which got the receiver out of the funk he had been in this season. He still has a 24% target share and has seen 21% of the team's end zone targets.
Most people don't think of Godwin as the red-zone threat among the Bucs' receivers; they think of Mike Evans. That's for good reason when Evans has scored touchdowns in five of his last six games and only has four games this season where he didn't find the end zone.
Tampa will face their in-state rivals, the Jacksonville Jaguars, at home. The Jags are a friendly foe for receivers to face, ranking 26th in adjusted fantasy points per target to the position. That's good for Godwin and Evans, who combine to see nearly 50% of the team's targets.
With an implied team total of 22.5 points, these three players give us a great reason to look at Tampa this week.
Seattle Seahawks
Geno Smith ($6,600), D.K. Metcalf ($7,600), and Tyler Lockett ($6,700)
This stack is a bit under-the-radar, but makes a good amount of sense when you break it down.
It looks like Geno Smith will be back under center for the Seattle Seahawks after missing the last two games. The last time we saw Smith, he finished as the fantasy QB1 in Week 13.
D.K. Metcalf also went off in that game, finishing with 34.1 half-PPR points. He's proven to be Smith's favorite target, with 24% of the targets and 43% of the air yards with Smith at QB. Tyler Lockett isn't too far behind him, seeing 23% of the targets and 33% of the air yards.
This trio should be in a position for success this week against the Tennessee Titans. The Titans are also a pass-funnel defense, ranking 7th against the run but 27th against the pass. They allow the fourth-highest success rate for quarterbacks. The Seahawks will likely be able to throw the ball in this game, and their passing game could be excellent in fantasy.
There tends to be a hesitancy to roster players in their first game back from injury, which should make us want to play Geno even more -- especially for just $6,600.
