NL West Odds: Is the Market "Dodgers or Bust"?

The NL West has not offered the most competitive variety throughout recent seasons.

Notably, the Los Angeles Dodgers have won the division in back-to-back campaigns. Further out, the "Boys in Blue" have worn the NL West crown in 10 of the past 11 years. Other than L.A., only the San Francisco Giants have won a division title dating back to 2011.

Back in the here and now, Los Angeles appears positioned to run away with this grouping once again. Still, what does the divisional market look like at FanDuel Sportsbook?

In early May, the NL West odds list the Dodgers as extremely short favorites. From there, the San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks are next in the pecking order, though, much further down.

Let's dive into FanDuel Sportsbook's NL West betting market and see how it relates to the current divisional landscape.

Los Angeles Dodgers (-2300)

As alluded to, this rebuilt Dodgers club is operating like a well-oiled machine -- particularly on offense.

Entering Monday, Los Angeles currently paces all 30 MLB franchises in OPS (.806), wOBA (.355), bases on balls (156), total runs (197) and runs scored per game (5.47). From there, numberFire has the Dodgers (2.51 nERD) as the pinnacle team on their baseball power rankings.

Less than a week into May, L.A. has already built a 5.5-game lead in the division. Currently, the gap between them and the Padres is the largest margin between a first and second-place team throughout all six MLB groupings.

Superstar slugger Shohei Ohtani has been an instant success with the Dodgers, thriving alongside fellow studs Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman and Will Smith. If the pitching in Hollywood can follow suit, they will be positioned to make noise outside of the divisional market, as well. According to FanDuel Sportsbook, Los Angeles is a three-to-one favorite to win the 2024 World Series.

The Dodgers are priced with -2300 odds to win the NL West. Genuinely, that removes any value on them here. With that said, can someone else from the division beat L.A.? After all, we are not even a quarter of the way through the regular season.

The Field

As for the field, San Diego has the next shortest price at FanDuel Sportsbook to win the NL West at 23-to-1 odds. The Friars sit under .500 (18-19) entering May 6th, but perhaps a recent trade for two-time batting champion Luis Arraez catalyzes the ball club. The Padres already boast a .736 team OPS, but their pitching could use a boost. Still, they are 3-2 against L.A. in the current campaign.

The Diamondbacks -- who are the reigning National League champions -- have displayed mixed results so far in 2024. Their .319 team wOBA is solid, but many of last season's contributors have gotten off to slow starts this year. Either way, Arizona has not finished first in the division in nearly 15 seasons. Further out, the D-backs have only won the NL West on five occasions, which is actually tied with San Diego despite joining some-30 years later. As it is now, the Snakes are yielding 30-to-1 odds in this market.

Soon to be the Bay Area's lone MLB franchise, the Giants won the division as recently as 2021, notching their ninth NL West title. However, San Francisco does not appear to be operating in similar fashion right now. Heading into May 7th, they've lost six of their last eight contests. The fact that S.F. is scoring only 3.67 runs per game this season is not helping. Overall, they have 45-to-1 odds to take the grouping with more than 125 games left to play.

In the cellar yet again, the Colorado Rockies are the lone franchise here to have never won the division. Weirdly enough, the Cincinnati Reds, Atlanta Braves and Houston Astros each show more NL West crowns than Colorado. That doesn't seem to be changing. With the Rox already 14 games back of Los Angeles, the "Blake Street Bombers" are an exorbitant long shot in this market; Colorado is labeled with 500-to-1 odds at FanDuel Sportsbook.
