2024 Kentucky Derby Horse Owners List (Do Any Celebrities Own Horses in this Year's Race?)

Ownership of Kentucky Derby horses varies significantly, just as ownership across the entire horse racing industry does. Some horses in the field are owned by just one person, whereas others are owned by large partnerships or even groups of multiple partnerships. Some horses are owned by their breeders, and others were purchased for hundreds of thousands of dollars, or even millions of dollars, at a sale.

Famous Horse Owners for the 2024 Kentucky Derby

Though you may only know the name “Godolphin” if you follow horse racing closely, you’ll be familiar with the person behind Godolphin if you follow world affairs. Godolphin is the racing stable of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai and the prime minister and vice president of the United Arab Emirates.

Other owners may not be famous outside of horse racing, but some of the most accomplished owners in the sport have horses in the Kentucky Derby in 2024. Michael Tabor, co-owner of points leader Sierra Leone, won the 1994 Kentucky Derby with Thunder Gulch. He, Mrs. John Magnier, and Westerberg also co-owned the 2023 Kentucky Derby runner, Verifying, alongside Jonathan Poulin and Derrick Smith.

Some of the owners have shined under other major spotlights, as well. Repole Stables (Mike Repole), owner and breeder of Fierceness, also owned the 2022 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner and scratched Kentucky Derby morning-line favorite Forte in partnership with St. Elias Stables. St. Elias is a co-owner of Deterministic, who had enough points to get into the 2024 Kentucky Derby but will be bypassing the race. Klaravich Stables, owner and breeder of Domestic Product, campaigned the 2019 Horse of the Year Bricks and Mortar with William H. Lawrence.

Though horses being owned by their trainer is common in horse racing day-to-day across the country, it is less common in the biggest races like the Kentucky Derby. Danny Gargan previously owned an interest in Society Man, though sold it after he finished second in the Wood Memorial.
